OFA Boston Health Survery

I was checking out the OFA site, and am delighted to see that they are very commited to helping breed better bostons by providing a confidential survery on past and present boston terrier health.  You can enter info from bostons that you owned in the past on their health, and they are going to use this information to determine what health problems are top priority, which are getting better due to good breeding practices, and which are getting worse.  They will use this information to determine where to focus genetic testing!  Fantastic!  For those of us that love our breed, to have this kind of focus on the bostons health is incredible!  Check it out at http://www.offa.org/surveys/survey_boston.html and if you have owned a bo

The house without babies

Wow, the past 10 weeks has been so much fun!  Mia went to her new home on the weekend and it seems that so far, she is settling in well.  I have had quite a few pictures and stories and am loving the updates so much.  I really miss them all!  But, there is some exciting news.  Dandy had a 'date' with a cute little ckc registered boston about two months ago named Katie, and she not only got pregnant, but she got HUGE.  I was contacted today to inform me that she had gone into labour last night, and today, is the proud mom of 6 healthy babies!  4 girls and two boys!  I have to say, Dandy has some beautiful babies.  I will post some pictures of this new litter in the coming days.  Have a wonderful rest of your summer and I will keep everyone posted as to how

Mia...back to being an only child

Mia the little sausage on legs is doing great sans brothers.  She is such a cutie now!  She absolutely LOVES running around the yard and playing with the big dogs.  She tug o wars with the best of them, although I have to take care to make sure they remember that she is there and to be gentle.  She has adapted well to being the only puppy (again) and has been sleeping through the night like a perfect little angel.  Raising a litter of puppies is a ton of work, in case anyone doesn't know, but it is so rewarding and worth the effort.  I smile when I think about the world with a few more bostons.  My coworkers laugh at me when I say that, but I do believe that its true.  My bostons can make me laugh no matter what my day has been like.  I just think about them and I smile.  Most people think I am nuts to have 5 dogs, but I love my big furry family and would not have it any other way.  Even at this moment...Faith (the princess) is not just asking for breakfast, but is DEMANDING it, and dutifully, I will go and get her majesty her meal...sigh :)

Last night I bid farewell to Little Clark.  He was the last of Molly and Dandy's litter to go to his new home.  Thank you everyone for providing the kids with such wonderful homes.  I am appreciative beyond words.  All I want is for you all to feel like you got the best little buddies in the world, and for them to be spoiled rotten with love.  Please do not ever hesitate to send me an email or a phone call if you have any questions.  If I dont know the answer, I can probably find someone that does.  I will always appreciate the occasional update on how they are doing, and would love to see pictures as they grow.  THANK YOU

Abbath went home to Regina last week, but in all of the excitement we forgot to get his photo with his new dad!  So he was nice enough to send me one for the website.  Abbath has some mini schnauzers at grandma and grandpa's to play with so hopefully they can teach him the ropes!

Well, little Clark is going to be leaving home tomorrow night, for his new life with his wonderful new family.  Im really going to miss that little guy.  He is sweet through and through.  He looks up with adoring eyes as if to say 'am i cute enough?'  He is the last of Molly's crew to go, and that will leave just little Mia for one more precious week.  I have had numerous updates from everyone of my puppy families, and everyone seems to be doing great and adjusting well to their new homes.  There are some really cute you tube videos of Bumper learning how to sit on command and running around in his new yard.  I will look up the link and post it tomorrow morning for everyone.  My Dad was just here for a visit and he sadly lost his boston girl about a month or so ago, so I think he benefited greatly from some puppy therapy.  My dad really misses his Boston (her name was Luna too, and she lived to be about 13 and a half) but he wont be ready for another dog for a year or so he thinks.  Luna was very sweet and a wonderful companion for my dad for many years.  She came to us as a rescue and it was my mom that actually fell in love with her.  I took her home for a visit and she ended up just staying with them.  My mom passed away in 2006, and Luna I think really helped my Dad get through that time.

Well, its been a busy week.  So busy I have not had much time to write.  Barney went to his new home on Sunday, then Luna on Wed night, followed by Quinton and Bumper the next two nights.  Tomorrow, I see off little Abbath to his new home in Regina.  All of a sudden, the house is becoming very quiet again!  I am so thankful that I get to have little Mia and Clark for a little bit longer...it will help with my separation anxiety!  Speaking of Mia, man is she a smart little thing.  I can hardly believe it, but she is almost fully house trained at 6 weeks.  She will go to the door and let us know she wants out.  she woke me this morning at 6 am sharp first with little barks, then before long she was screaming at the top of her lungs, so i got up, carted her outside, and she had a big pee!  Im so proud of her.  She likes sleeping in the dish i bought for water for the big dogs.  Its just the right size!

CHS Inspection

Here is something that I think is fantastic!  Since petland stopped selling puppies and kittens, there has been a lot of concern in the veterinary world about where new puppies will be coming from.  There are plenty of good breeders out there, but there are also some that are not so good.  I see evidence of this every day at work.  Anyhow, Kijiji is THE place now that people often go to when looking for a puppy.  Breeders good and bad are advertising there.  How does someone learn whether a breeder falls under the good category, or the not so good?  Well, Kijiji and the Calgary Humane Society have teamed up to try to address this issue.  As a breeder, we can request a visit from CHS to inspect our homes and breeding facilities.  They ask all of the questions and do the homework for you.  What kind of food is being fed, veterinary care, housing of the puppies and adults, how many dogs are being bred and how often, etc, etc.  Then, they do periodic spot visits down the road so they can make sure that the standards are being kept up.  So, when I learned about this program, I was immediately impressed and called to book an appointment.  To my surprise, the CHS representative is an Animal Health Tech and she has been overwhelmed with calls to come and visit.  Isnt that great?  I wanted to take the CHS inspector's picture for the website, but she politely declined.  Instead, here is another super cute puppy pick!
